Stockholm City Hall – Custom Landmark Tanjore Painting

A Swedish Icon, Reborn in the Ancient Art of Thanjavur

When a client from Sweden walked into our Chennai gallery with a photograph of the iconic Stockholm City Hall (Stockholms stadshus) and asked if we could recreate it in the 400-year-old tradition of Tanjore painting — we said yes without hesitation.

What followed was a labour of devotion, craft, and cultural bridge-building.

The Journey — From Stencil to Masterpiece

Stage 1 – The Foundation: We began by carefully preparing the hardboard base and hand-drawing the stencil of the City Hall's iconic silhouette — the soaring central tower, the grand arched colonnades, the ornate domes and spires — all faithfully reproduced with precision. Decorative gemstones were set along the gold border frame.

Stage 2 – The Gold Relief Work: Using traditional gesso and 22-karat gold foil, we built up the three-dimensional relief work — the tower's crown, the decorative finials, the arched windows, and the ornamental lamp posts — each element raised and gilded by hand.

Stage 3 – Colour & Life: Rich colours were layered in — the deep terracotta red of the brick facade, the teal-green of the copper roofing, the luminous blue sky with soft clouds, the shimmering water body below, and the lush green trees framing the sides.

Stage 4 – The Final Masterpiece: The completed painting captures the full grandeur of Stockholm City Hall — the sky, the waterfront, the trees, the tower, every dome and spire — all rendered in the unmistakable opulence of Tanjore art with gold embellishments and precious stone borders.

The client was overjoyed. The painting now travels home to Sweden. 🇮🇳✨🇸🇪
